Description: A wooden box containing eight wooden cubes painted red, blue and black. The box has a special internal hinge, which allows the sides to open out flat permitting unhindered access to the cubes. The control is screened on the lid. Purpose: The cubes represent in a concrete way the binomial equation (a + b) 2. To develop the child’s perception of differences in proportion in 3 dimensions and to encourage the perception of a mathematical pattern. An indirect preparation of the child for algebra. Note :In the nursery the presentation of the cube is purely sensorial and the child treats it as a puzzle. The progression to the algebraic formula comes at a much later stage.
